Introduction

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. The cardiovascular MRI is a high-speed scanner used for heart imaging, abdominal imaging and standard clinical studies. UIHC also has an open MRI scanner for patients who cannot tolerate the confined space of a traditional, closed scanner. Two additional MRI scanners provide round-the-clock capabilities for scanning inpatients and outpatients visiting UIHC. MRI scanners at UIHC enable physicians, as well as outside referring physicians to view anatomy using this non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging. With MRI there is no ionizing radiation involved, such as x-rays, and exquisite anatomic images are provided that inform physicians about the soft tissues, organs and vessels inside the patients body.
